Vör is a passive acoustic sensor built by 9 Mothers , the Austin counter-drone startup, to detect and track small uncrewed aircraft by the sound of their rotors. The system surfaced publicly in 2025 as one half of a two-part point-defence architecture — Vör listens, and a companion turret called Edda engages. Both names are drawn from Norse mythology, of a piece with the company’s own name; Vör is a goddess associated with vigilance and knowing.

The technical premise is that a spinning propeller is a hard signature to hide. Multi-rotor drones — the FPV quadcopters that have redrawn the frontline in Ukraine, and the commercial hobbyist frames improvised into weapons from Syria to the US-Mexico border — throw off distinctive rotor tones and broadband noise that microphone arrays can pick out of the environment, classify, and range on. 9 Mothers pitches Vör as an entirely passive sensor: no radar sweep, no radio-frequency probe, nothing an adversary can jam, decoy, or geolocate. In a threat environment where FPV operators are trained to listen for the whine of a counter-battery radar and displace before it can cue a shot, the absence of any emission is the entire point. According to the company, acoustic detections are handed off to Edda for engagement inside the last few hundred metres — the close-in band where longer-range counter-UAS radars and wide-area jammers tend to lose small, low-flying targets against ground clutter. The engineering details of the microphone array, the onboard compute doing the classification, and the software stack behind the acoustic model have not been made public.

9 Mothers has said its first units are shipping to the US government and to unnamed defence primes. Deployment counts, contract values, and any operational testing in Ukraine or elsewhere are not on the record. Vör has not been reported in combat.

The system sits inside a fast-crowding market for close-in counter-FPV, a category driven by two years of drone-heavy fighting in Ukraine and the recognition across Western militaries that a several-hundred-dollar quadcopter is genuinely dangerous to an armoured vehicle or a static position. Most of the field competes on the active side, with radar, RF direction-finding, and electronic-warfare jammers. Vör’s bet is that against small, cheap, low-signature drones, listening quietly beats sweeping loudly.
