Primer

US natural-language-AI firm that machine-reads vast volumes of text into structured intelligence for defence and security users.

Primer is a San Francisco company founded in 2015 by physicist Sean Gourley, built around a single idea: that the volume of text relevant to a security decision — news, social media, reports, intercepted communications — long ago outgrew the human capacity to read it. Primer’s natural-language-processing software machine-reads that flood across multiple languages and distils it into structured, mission-ready intelligence. Gourley handed the chief-executive role to Sean Moriarty, a former Ticketmaster CEO, in 2023, and the company has raised on the order of $237 million from backers including Lee Fixel’s Addition, Lux Capital, and DCVC.

Its two anchored products work in sequence. Command is a real-time situational-awareness tool that monitors tens of thousands of open-source feeds to surface emerging events, narratives, and threats as they unfold. Delta — sometimes presented as Primer’s enterprise platform — is the deeper analysis layer, fusing open-source material with an organisation’s own proprietary data into all-source intelligence. The company counts the US Air Force and Army among its customers, with work extending into the intelligence community since 2020.

Primer occupies the same data-fusion and decision-intelligence space as Palantir ’s Maven Smart System and Scale AI ’s Donovan, but from a distinctly text-first angle. Where Maven is built around imagery and full-motion video for targeting, Primer’s edge is in reading and understanding language at scale — an adjacent, not identical, slice of the AI-for-intelligence market that NATO militaries are now assembling.
