JSC Meridian (Politeko Aero)

Maker of the Spectator-M1 fixed-wing reconnaissance drone in Ukrainian military service.

JSC Meridian, a Kyiv-based enterprise within the state-owned Ukroboronprom defence concern, is the production partner behind the Spectator family of fixed-wing reconnaissance drones. The Spectator system began as a joint development in 2014 with Politeko Aero and the research park at Ukraine’s National Technical University “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (KPI). The current Spectator-M1 is a hand-launched intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft that carries day-and-night imaging, stays aloft for roughly two hours, and covers an area with a radius of about 30 km.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine adopted the Spectator-M1 in 2019 and took it into service from 2020, with deliveries reported across the air force and border service. Meridian markets the drone with proprietary resilience features, including a warning system that alerts the operator to incoming jamming, automatic switching between control modes, encrypted long-range links and an improved recovery system — design choices aimed at the contested electromagnetic environment of the front line.

In late 2024, Ukrainian scientists reported an AI-assisted control system for a modernised Spectator M-1M, described as letting the drone select its own flight altitude and detect objects, alongside a hydrogen fuel cell intended to quiet the engine for covert reconnaissance. As a state-owned producer, Meridian sits alongside the wider ecosystem of Ukrainian drone makers whose work is coordinated through the Brave1 defence-tech cluster.
