First Contact

A Ukrainian maker of AI-assisted FPV attack drones, whose Osa was reportedly used in the Spiderweb strikes on Russian strategic bombers.

First Contact is a Ukrainian manufacturer of AI-powered first-person-view attack drones, producing such systems since at least early 2024. Its Osa (“Wasp”) drone is built around a thick, fully enclosed frame that houses its electronics — a design suited to concealment and transport — and carries up to 3.3 kg of payload, flies for around 15 minutes, and reaches roughly 150 km/h.

The Osa drew wide attention as the platform reportedly used in Ukraine’s 1 June 2025 Operation Spiderweb, the Security Service of Ukraine’s coordinated strike that smuggled 117 FPV drones deep inside Russia and struck strategic bombers — including Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 aircraft — at airbases far from the front. Reporting has alleged the drones used in the operation carried elements of artificial intelligence to detect, identify and aim at vulnerable points on the target aircraft. First Contact is one of a cluster of Ukrainian FPV makers, alongside firms such as Wild Hornets and Vyriy Drone , pushing autonomy and machine-vision targeting into low-cost strike drones.
